At Superior Propane, your safety is our top priority. We understand the importance of using propane safely and want to provide you with the information you need to ensure a worry-free experience. Propane is a versatile, efficient, and environmentally friendly energy source that can be used for numerous applications such as heating, cooking, powering appliances and more. However, it's good to be aware of proper handling and preventive measures for safe use while enjoying all the benefits of propane.

Minimizing Potential Propane Tank Hazards

Propane is a safe and dependable fuel option and like any other fuel, there are some inherent risks that can be minimized by taking a few practical precautions. Let's dive into the safety tips and best practices for keeping your home safe

Propane Tank Leaks Detection

An odorant, called ethyl mercaptan, is added to propane to give it a distinct “rotten egg” smell to help users identify leaks. If you think you smell propane in or around your home, immediately:

  • Get everyone out of the building
  • Extinguish all smoking materials and open flames
  • Do not touch electrical switches or create any other source of ignition
  • Locate all propane equipment and turn off the propane supply
  • Call the fire department or dial 911 from a safe location
  • Do not re-enter the area until it is safe

Call Superior Propane at 1-87SUPERIOR (1-877-873-7467) to schedule a service call to assess and repair the leak once the area has been deemed safe

Propane Leak Detectors

A reliable way to enhance your family's safety at home is by installing a combustible gas detector. This device serves as an early warning system, alerting you to evacuate your home quickly in the rare event of a propane leak. Consider a model that can do double duty by detecting both propane leaks and carbon monoxide. This dual-capability device offers a comprehensive solution for your home safety needs.

Your detector should be certified by the Underwriter Laboratories of Canada (ULC). This independent organization is dedicated to testing, certifying, and inspecting product safety. A ULC-approved detector guarantees that your device meets the highest safety standards, providing you with an added layer of confidence in its performance.

Propane Tank Location

Propane tanks must be installed by a certified technician in specific locations according to regulations. Our certified technicians will assess your property and determine the best location for your tank, taking into account local and provincial regulations. By relying on our experts for installation, you can minimize the risk of accidents and ensure the safe operation of your propane system.

During the installation process, our technicians will ensure proper clearance from your home, any building or structure, the property line, windows and doors, and any sources of ignition and air intakes, including heat pumps and air conditioners. Our team will walk you through the safety features of the tank and provide you with important information to ensure its proper use and maintenance.

Do not attempt to relocate the propane tank on your own, as it may compromise safety and compliance with local codes and regulations.

Regular Propane Tank and System Checkups

We’re proactive when it comes to your safety. We conduct visual checkups of your propane tank and system with every delivery. Our dedicated delivery drivers are trained to assess the condition of your tank and fittings, ensuring they meet the required safety standards. If they notice any potential issues or concerns, they promptly notify our certified service technicians to conduct a thorough evaluation.

By incorporating these regular visual checkups into our delivery process, we vigilantly monitor the condition of your propane system, identify any potential hazards, and address them promptly. This approach ensures compliance with local and provincial regulations and provides you with peace of mind, knowing that your propane system is functioning safely.

Proper Storage Practices

  • Tank Placement: Once our certified technicians have installed the tank, refrain from modifying its position or adding things to the tank’s surroundings. This ensures that the tank remains secure and minimizes potential hazards.
  • Long-Term Storage: Propane does not deteriorate over time, allowing for safe product storage for extended periods. Keep the tanks as they were when installed to ensure optimal safety.
  • Clearance: Your propane tank will be installed with proper clearance from buildings, structures, and enclosed spaces such as garages or basements. This reduces the risk of leaks accumulating in confined areas.
  • Accessibility: The area surrounding the tank and the pathway to the tank should remain accessible at all times. This allows for easy inspection, maintenance, and deliveries. That means clear from snow and ice in the wintertime.
  • Clear Surroundings: Keep the immediate vicinity of the tank clear of debris, clutter, and vegetation. This minimizes the risk of accidents and provides ample room for ventilation.
  • Propane Level: Propane tanks should always have some propane in them to avoid a concentrated mercaptan odor that settles to the bottom of the tank. Additionally, it's important to understand that propane tanks are considered full at 70-80% capacity. This is to allow room for gas expansion, which can vary depending on outside temperatures. This is a safety measure, and the tank is filled to its appropriate and safe maximum level capacity.
  • Cleaning: When clearing snow, avoid cleaning the propane tank with sharp tools or brooms to prevent damage.

What NOT to do with your propane tank:

  1. Avoid having any objects near your tank or cylinder. The area surrounding it should be clear from debris, brush, or sources of ignition.

  2. Never store objects near to the tank as they could prevent tank access and become trip hazards

  3. Never store or place a propane cylinder indoors or in an enclosed area such as a basement, garage or shed.

  4. Never let snow get piled, plowed or blown on your tank or cylinders, gas lines, regulators or appliance vents, which must be clear and unobstructed at all times. The additional weight on this equipment may pose an immediate danger. Use a soft brush to clear off snow.

Can you spot the hazards? These propane cylinders are surrounded by debris and obstructed by objects, posing trip hazards for delivery drivers. There are also sources of ignition located too close to the cylinders.
